A Ringgold police social media page says the department has identified a man who made off with several flagpoles that honor veterans. The name was not announced, and the flagpoles were not holding flags at the time they were taken.

"This investigation is continuing and there are no further updates at this time," the post said. "Thank you to everyone who posted, called or otherwise wanted to assist us in this request."

Ringgold Police Chief Dan King said Wednesday by phone that, with the investigation still underway, it's impossible to say whether the man intended to steal the flagpoles or thought they were free, abandoned property. The organizer of the project, Mike Scholte, also thinks it could have been a misunderstanding.

"I hope that is the case," Schlote said via text message. "I would like our property returned and am not concerned about retribution."

He added that any inquiries over the flag fund can be directed to Ringgold City Hall.
