Lifelong Chattanoogan Connie Roberts celebrated the end of one career with the beginning of another. In the 1980s, she was one of the first women to suit up and inspect a nuclear reactor. Since then, she's radiated success, spending 50 years working in graphic design, marketing and advertising. While still employed full-time, she laid the groundwork for her retirement dream. "At 65, I challenged myself to paint every day for 100 days," she remembers. "It let me get to my dream a lot faster."

Roberts focuses on classic art subjects, typically working with acrylic paint on stretched canvas or cradled wood panels. Beginning with a carefully chosen color palette, she applies the first layers using large brushes, various mark-making tools and palette knives to add texture and depth. "Color, energy and spontaneity are driving forces behind everything that I create," she says.

Titled after a popular saying that says that the spirits of deceased loved ones often visit us through cardinals, her painting "Cardinals Appear When Angels Are Near" resonates with locals for its deep symbolism. "Everyone has a story about [these birds]," Roberts says. "It's a big part of why I paint them."

She adds that she's happy just to be able to follow her passion. "I was an artist my whole career," she says. "Not many people get to do that."
